#11 Feint Before The Fall
This painting is oil on board. Before this, most of my work was in watercolor, based on nature but filtered through a post-modern sensibility, many of them collaged. Now my studio is in the woods and the past decade has been devoted to a series of oil paintings, all two-foot square, of this place. This body of work is a conversation with pigment, brush, light and season. From watercolor I hold an affection for mark making, stroke and layer. Oil brings viscosity, saturation and surface into play. Each painting begins in random marks made when cleaning the brushes during the painting before. The progress of one painting poses a puzzle or several, solved by the passing of the season into the new painting.
