Elizabeth Buttler

I landed in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts some 28 years ago, after moving from Portland, Oregon (my home town) to Bristol, England and many places in between, following the commercial and entertainment animation market. I worked on projects such as Return to Oz and the California Raisins for Will Vinton Studios, The Penny Cartoon for PeeWee’s Playhouse, The Adventures of Gumby, Wallace and Gromit films for Aardman Animations, many commercials and ran a small animation studio called Sculptoons in San Francisco with animation director, Tom Gasek.  After my son was born, I segued into working as a freelance artist on a variety of projects, working in modeling clay, wire, acrylic paint, watercolor, pencil, scratch board, fabric, Photoshop, Illustrator....pretty much everything including the kitchen sink.
During the isolation of the pandemic, I started a painting practice. I have found that my sense of composition is often influenced by my animation background - I often visualize a painting as a sequential diptych or triptych, like frames from a filmstrip. I also found that I really liked how
acrylic paint allowed me to build up transparent layers to create a luminous quality, without waiting long periods of time for drying between layers. As a result of this focus, I’ve created a website featuring my painting , with both originals and prints available for purchase. I also take commissions for portraits of any kind: people, animals, places, things, events. Examples of commissions can be viewed on my website.
